Irvine, Calif. - The Long Beach State women's basketball team topped UC Irvine, 59-53 at the Bren Events Center Thursday.
UCI senior Stephanie Duda, in the final home game of the year, scored 15 points to give her 1,003 in her career. She becomes the 14th Anteater women's player to reach the 1,000-point plateau and ranks 13th overall in the record books. Duda also led all players with 14 rebounds, recording her league leading 16th double-double of the year.
UC Irvine led 47-43 with 8:17 to go in the game but was unable to score again until Haley Tull hit a jumper with 2:27 remaining. While UCI was scoreless, Long Beach State built an eight point advantage, 55-47 at 4:24 before Tull's bucket. The Forty-Niners would score five more unanswered to go up by nine (59-50) with 52 seconds on the clock before Christina Zdenek hit a three-pointer for the Anteaters for the final, 59-53.
Long Beach State had three players score in double-figures led by LaTorya Barbee with 15. Tyresha Calhoun came off the bench and went 5-10 from the field, adding 11 points, while Karina Figueroa totaled 10 points. Courtney Jacob and Brett Timmons led the 49ers with seven rebounds.
Senior Haley Tull and junior Kirian Ishizaki followed Duda in the scoring column for UCI with 10 points each. Tull also added two blocks and three assists. Senior Christina Zdenek recorded eight points and a career-high seven rebounds.
Long Beach State is 8-18 overall and 6-8 in the Big West, while UCI goes to 6-22 on the year and 2-12 in league play.
UCI will travel to Cal State Northridge Saturday for a 7:00 p.m. game.
